Student Conduct on School Property

The Thomaston Board of Education requires all students to exhibit respectful, civil, and orderly

behavior on school grounds and during school-sponsored events. Disruptive, hostile, or

aggressive actions will not be permitted under any circumstances. Students are expected to

adhere to these standards to support a safe and productive educational environment.

To maintain a secure, respectful space for learning, no student on school property or at school

events shall:

  1. Physically harm, threaten, harass, or intimidate any staff member, student, or other person.
  2. Use offensive, obscene, or abusive language.
  3. Engage in behaviors that disrupt or attempt to disrupt school or classroom activities.
  4. Damage or threaten to damage school property or the property of others.
  5. Deface or otherwise disrespect school facilities or materials.
  6. Engage in illegal activities, including the use of alcohol, drugs, or possession of weapons.
  7. Impede or interfere with the normal operation of educational programs, school activities, or safety procedures.
  8. Be present in unauthorized areas or for unlawful purposes.
  9. Operate vehicles, if applicable, in a reckless manner or disregard staff instructions.
  10. Refuse to comply with any school or district policy, rule, or staff directive.

Consequences for Violations:

  1. Any student engaging in disruptive, threatening, or harmful behavior will be directed to cease immediately and may be removed from the area by school staff or administration.
  2. Students using offensive or abusive language will be reminded to communicate respectfully. Repeated offenses may result in removal from the activity or school event.
  3. Violations of conduct expectations may lead to disciplinary actions according to the student code of conduct, including detentions, suspensions, or further measures.
  4. For severe or repeated offenses, students may face additional penalties, including referral to local law enforcement if applicable.

Reporting and Accountability

Students and staff are encouraged to report any acts of violence, harassment, or property damage.  Incidents will be investigated by school administration. If a violation of Policy 5316 is confirmed, disciplinary action will be applied, which may include:

  • Involvement of parents/guardians in behavior support plans.
  • Suspension from school activities and premises for a designated period.
  • Permanent exclusion from certain school activities or privileges if the violations are severe or repeated.
